Rainer Schnaitmann has become one of the defining voices of modern Württemberg—an architect by training and a winemaker by conviction, known for elegant, terroir-expressive wines. His ‘Götzenberg’ Riesling comes from the VDP.Grosse Lage Uhlbacher Götzenberg, a historic site in the Remstal valley. This is Grand Cru Riesling from sandstone soils, farmed organically, aged for nearly two years on the lees, and built to evolve over a decade or more.
- WINEMAKER: Rainer Schnaitmann
- FARMING: Certified Organic (DE-ÖKO-022)
- VARIETY: 100% Riesling
- TERROIR: From the Götzenberg vineyard in Uhlbach, a VDP.Grosse Lage classified site in Württemberg. The soils are composed primarily of reed sandstone, which imparts a firm mineral core and stony length. Yields are kept very low at 35 hl/ha to preserve concentration.
- VINIFICATION: Whole-cluster pressing with short maceration, followed by spontaneous fermentation. The wine aged for 22 months on its full lees in old 1,200-liter oak barrels, promoting both texture and integration without masking freshness or origin.
- AGING: 22 months on full lees in large, neutral oak barrels; bottled in August 2021
- TASTING NOTES: Golden in the glass with initial reductive notes that unfurl into ripe peach, yellow apple, pineapple, and white flowers. The palate is structured and precise—saline, creamy, and mineral—with vibrant acidity and long, stony persistence. Elegant, powerful, and built for aging.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Butter-poached lobster, grilled halibut with beurre blanc, chicken in morel cream sauce, spaetzle with mushrooms, or tinned trout with lemon and crème fraîche
