The Mascot is a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon made from distinct hillside vineyards: specifically, the younger vines of Harlan Estate, BOND, and Promontory. Founded by Will Harlan, it began as a small, informal project shared among the family, the winemaking team, and a handful of close friends.
- WINEMAKER: Cory Empting (Director of Winegrowing for the Harlan family domain)
- FARMING: Sustainable hillside viticulture, with a focus on dry farming and soil regeneration
- VARIETY: 85-95% Cabernet Sauvignon, with small quantities of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot
- TERROIR: Sourced from select hillside vineyards in Oakville, Yountville, and Napa Valley, featuring volcanic, clay, and loamy soils
- VINIFICATION: The young-vine fruit is vinified separately, reflecting the character of each estate, before blending and barrel selection 6-14 months after fermentation
- AGING: Aged for nearly three years in a combination of new and neutral French oak and Austrian casks, followed by 18 months of bottle aging before release
-
TASTING NOTES:
- Aromas of gentle red fruit lead into a savory depth with fine-grained tannins. A seamless balance of tension and silkiness, highlighting purity and structure. Subtle floral notes and dark spice weave through the finish, which is long and elegant. Deep, brooding aromas of dark fruit, black tea, and herbal notes. Rich texture, with powdery tannins.
- FOOD PAIRINGS: Ideal with grilled ribeye, roasted duck, wild mushroom risotto, or aged cheeses

The story of The Mascot can be traced back to the founding of Harlan Estate in 1984, a pioneering winery located in the western hills of Oakville. With the vision of creating the "first growth of California," Harlan Estate set the stage for excellence in winemaking. In 1996, the family expanded their portfolio with BOND, a collection of "Grand Cru" vineyards that showcase the diverse expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon across different regions within the Napa Valley. Then, in 2008, the family acquired Promontory, a vineyard that represents a modern and innovative approach to wine growing, led by the second generation of the family. As these esteemed vineyards underwent replanting, the younger vines found their place in The Mascot project. Although these vines carried the distinguished heritage of their parent properties, they also held the promise of developing their own unique character. The Mascot became a platform to explore and express the individuality of these young vines, offering a glimpse into the evolution of the esteemed Harlan Estate, BOND, and Promontory. While each of these vineyards possesses its own distinct qualities, it is through The Mascot that the individual character of their "grands vins" can be revealed. The Mascot represents a culmination of the family's winemaking journey, capturing the essence of their vineyards and the legacy they have built over the years.
These hillside vineyards are located on the western side of the Napa Valley in the Oakville benchlands. The vines here dig into well-draining and gravelly soils derived from ancient alluvial deposits flowing down the Mayacamas Mountains. These soils force the vines to develop deep root systems, leading to lower yields and concentrated flavors in the grapes. The stress from the soils, combined with the warm climate of Napa Valley, contributes to the intensity and complexity of the Cabernet Sauvignon produced.
The winemaking process involves meticulous evaluation by the talented team led by Cory Empting, who carefully select the finest lots of young-vine Cabernet Sauvignon for inclusion in The Mascot. After fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels for nearly three years before bottling. This extended aging period allows the flavors and textures to develop and integrate, resulting in a wine of exceptional depth and complexity. Further maturation in the bottle for 18 months before release ensures that The Mascot is ready to be enjoyed at its finest.
The Mascot unveils its complexity with opulent and expressive dark fruit, aromas of black plum compote, and black cherries, hints of black tea, sweet leaf tobacco, and classic bell pepper aromas. On the palate, its rich texture and cocoa powder-like tannins create a full, ripe mouthfeel in a lovely balance. With a hearty ABV of 14.5%, The Mascot Cabernet Sauvignon is a bold and captivating expression of Napa Valley's finest vineyards. Pair it with a lavish dinner of grilled tomahawk steaks, braised lamb shanks, or aged cheddar cheese to complement its robust flavors and luxurious texture.
